Ruth Block comes from a family of renowned artists. Born in Tampa, she is the daughter of the late Saul Arnold, an abstract expressionist from the New York City's Art Students League; Jane Steiner, a founding member of the Chicago Society of Artists, was her maternal grandmother.

Ms. Block holds an MFA from John F. Kennedy University, a B.A. in Art Education and a M.A. in Counseling from Michigan State University. She studied at the Art Institute of Chicago, and in Mexico at the Belles Artes and in the Masters of Fine Arts Program at the Instituto Allende in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico.

Listed in Who's Who of America Women, Ms. Block was also honored as a Nominee of the Oakland Business Arts Award for her creative leadership role as Coordinator/Director of the Oakland/Berkeley Fire Art Project.

The Life Drawing Video Workshops Series that Ruth launched in May 1988 is still considered one of the best courses of artistic instruction available today- both in a true classroom or video format- and led to her award by The Artists Magazine as one of the "Ten Best Teachers on Tape." The initial series is followed by the highly acclaimed "Classic Models' Poses" and a series on "Painting the Figure in Watercolor." All three series, produced by Artists InterActive Video Productions have recently been updated and converted to DVD. The workshops are advertised intermittently in the Artist's Magazine and The American Artist.

Ms. Block continues to teach art classes and workshops to adults in the San Francisco Bay Area where she currently resides. She is devoted to her own passion for creating meaningful art as well as to facilitating this process for her students.

Ms Block's paintings, drawings, sculptures, and multimedia projects are exhibited in public and private collections throughout the United States, Europe, and Mexico.

"Predominately figurative, working within a broad, yet unified stylistic repertoire, Ruth Block is amazingly proficient in watercolor, oil, acrylic, multimedia, clay, wood and bronze sculpture, and at imparting her knowledge to others. She is a technically accomplished artist whose work is strikingly beautiful, intriguing and psychologically complex. She balances a strong appreciation of formal qualities and a masterful ability at rendering with an apparent spontaneous looseness and sensuousness of color, bringing an immediate empathic resonance between her subjects and viewers."
